What I did in Uni?

So this was a question posted to me when I asked what I should blog about.

What did I do in Uni?

Ok guys, it may seem like a simple question but I'm gonna be very honest there's a lot more to this question. Let's take you back to 2004 when I had to juggle between studies and was still at that time actively doing competitive sports. I stopped a few weeks before SPM because I had a strict dad who feared I might have just lost it (hahaha! I was in loveeee with my sports life). After my final competition for Malaysia Open, I decided to quit rhythmic gymnastics and focus on studying for my exam that was 2 weeks away, or did my dad make me do it?

Right after SPM, I wasn't sure to wait it out till I get my results, stay home and chill a little while or to go straight into A Levels. So naturally we did it the Asian way and scout out for places to do A-Levels and saw that Kolej Tuanku Jaafar offered a scholarship for A-Levels! Applied for it, succeeded and got into KTJ right away for the January 2005 intake. No bumming around at home I guess! Well, thank god I took it coz otherwise I would not have met my senior in college by the name of....Aiman :P

Being the good Asian daughter, I followed what my (tiger) mum wanted me to do - accounts (Although when I grew up, I did have that thought about becoming a scientist or a Doctor after seeing my dad attending to his dental students and patients at work). Don't we all want to do accounting and finance and see ourselves applying to London School of Economics eventually?

But that wasn't the case for me. I HATED ACCOUNTS in college. I was always struggling to make sure the balance sheet balance! Like omg why don't the ledger tally? Debit credit debit credit *headache*.

I did though LOVE MATHEMATICS and STATISTICS. Those were my favourite subjects since school and it was always the first homework that I completed. No matter how difficult the assignment was, I was always super excited to solve it!

Of course you'd already figured that I did not make the cut for LSE. Let's just say my mum's dream of wanting to see her daughter doing accounting and finance went down the drain. LSE only wanted As in everything who am I kidding hahaha! I scored As for all Maths and Statistics subjects and not my Accounting and Finance.

So guys, I ended up doing BSc Economics, Mathematics and Statistics.

The irony of it all though....I graduated and went on to become an Investment Banker! Totally loved balance sheet, financial statements, numbers, debit, credit, P&L etc. 3 years later I went on to complete my Masters in MSc Financial Engineering. 8 years in CIMB Investment and now I'm doing something similar in FashionValet. So you know what they say, never say never! You may just end up loving the thing you once hated :)) Most importantly, I had the best times in College and Uni!

Social Media Stigma

A friend once asked me this: "What should I say if that person asks me why I unfollowed her/him on instagram?"

My answer was simple. That person does not deserve an explanation. Either that or you can be very honest that the content no longer what attracts you.

Is it wrong to unfollow somebody? Of course not. It's a social media account after all.

You choose to be public or not because it's your account. You choose to follow or follow and then unfollow someone eventually because the content no longer attracts you. All these are choices you make - for yourself.

It does not mean that if you join the social media platform communities you get to dictate what your followers can or cannot do. You don't own these followers. You have no right on these followers. If you are a public account then be prepared to get comments that you may dislike or a very inspiring comment from strangers. Good or bad you've got to allow it.

Why? Because you had chosen to go public. Can you delete it? Can you block someone? Of course you can! Ultimately it is your account, it is your choice. It is your life.

Social Media accounts (or rather how your instagram account had performed) is not the ticket to heaven. It's literally what it is - a SOCIAL MEDIUM.

In today's world, people take everything on Social Media so seriously that it has led to so many social problems. People comparing lives on instagram/facebook. Getting envious. Wanting to be the most liked - but not portraying your true self. Wanting to be seen with the latest handbag/gadget/lifestyle because you had seen someone have it on social media or getting into marital quarrels because you just told your spouse that you wished you were both more like that celebrity couple.

Always think before posting something up and be very careful to not post something that you are not.

It's ok to not post your whole life on social media but I've said this in my previous post - people are crazy to think that what was not (insta)grammed never happened. People think you have a perfect life because of all the happy pictures posted, the laughing moments at work, the nice OOTds. Like any other normal human being, everyone does feel sad and down for many different reasons.

What's most important is to be a responsible social media user. If you choose to post something, post it up because it is true - not because you think the post will garner likes and elevate your popularity. Not getting many likes does not mean people hate you nor does getting a million likes means everyone who had liked it loves you. Don't tell me you count the like from "mahukan ketiak putih?' and "hi I'm old money collectors" accounts as legit?

THINK BEFORE YOU POST! Always!!! :))

What Do I Write About?

So I've been receiving a lot of DMs about wanting me to update my blog - I feel the same too!

...only that most of the time I can't find the time to sit down and finish up a post or I may have started writing and then stopped halfway and don't feel it anymore when I'm about to continue and finish it up in time to post it up...or I just don't know what to write about, haha!

So yesterday I put up a question on my Instagram to ask "What Should I Write About" and boy did I get a lot of content ideas! Amongst the many, there were a lot of interest though in particular topics which was:

  1. How do I stay positive all the time (Trust me, I have my down moments too k, haha!)
  2. How did I move on so positively after my miscarriage
  3. My career journey - from start all the way till now (I've only been in 2 companies so far since I graduated 10 years ago!)
  4. What I did in CIMB and what do I do now at FV
  5. How do I stay the same size eventhough I eat so much
  6. Cafe ideas!
  7. How I met Aiman and how we continue to keep the relationship so fun (we have our fights toooo guysss)
  8. What I did in Uni
  9. Where do I see myself in the future (being a Doctor, hahhaa I wish!)
So these were the most suggested ideas that kept coming in repeatedly. I'm definitely gonna find time to write - maybe I should do  one post a week? Or one post a month at least? I'm already committing to join my sister in law on one book a month challenge (total 12 in a year) and am on my 4th book now! Maybe I can commit to this too!

...on that note....

Did I just updated my blog? Hahahaha Oh yeahhh I just did! See I did keep my promise to blog a post this weekend! Now I need to go create the content for the most-asked questions above. Feel free to let me know what you would like to write about more. But don't la so deep the topics k, I received a request to write a post about emerging markets.....aisehhh :P

I'll update again by next weekend! Have a great week ahead everybody :)))
