Etiquette

Etiquette and attitude are the two things that are so significantly important. Regardless of where you are. When eating, when at work, when talking to people, when driving. Everything involves good attitude and etiquette. That's professionalism. These, to me are the two key factors that would differentiate you from others.

Unfortunately, we don't have that in Malaysia. What I often see and witness - We swear when things don't go the way we want it to be. We try to bring others down when they're rising - just because you can't see others being better than you, when evidently you're not doing anything to earn it anyway. We think things come for free. We want to be acknowledged EVEN when we do nothing (read: 80% doesn't count. You want to do something, do it wholeheartedly and fully). When you're on top, you look down and order those below - power abuse or even power struggle. It happens a lot.

I still live in a fairytale world where I think everyone is nice. I guess as time passes by, I need to learn to accept the fact that it's otherwise. I'm one with the highest tolerance level amongst many, but when I really think it's done wrongly, I tell. Directly. Whether or not you're older than I am or even more senior than I am. Professionally. No raising of voice and no usage of crude words :) I'm blessed for I have an excellent team at work, and bosses who remind me to often handle matters professionally and with maturity :) No wonder I love going to work! I may be the youngest in the office, but definitely not treated like a kanak kanak ribena, but instead with the highest respect. Alhamdulillah :)

However, sadly, I guess this doesn't take place everywhere. I recently witnessed a situation when one is put under significant pressure and the way they handle it is just wrong. Sad. You tend to say things you'll regret later, or you'll end up hurting someone else when it's not life's biggest problem afterall and you fail to realize that you brush off the other person quite rudely. Man, I was shocked that our Malaysians can carry themselves THIS bad! I'm a proud Malaysian, and I lose respect for these kinda people. It really doesn't take much for you to have good attitude really :) Till today I am still shocked and how shallow one can be when it's power struggle + ego + doesn't understand the real meaning of respect + things don't go their way that one short time.

If we aspire to be the "best in the world" country, I guess it has to come from within first. That's us, ourselves :)

One thing's for sure, people around you play a big part too. The power of influence.

We Know What It Takes

This ad, I must say, is very eye-catching. Not because it's from my Company, but purely because it looks funny. In a "why the scribbled face" way.
Have you seen it before? Don't tell me you don't experience that one time when you're driving and from afar you secretly ask yourself, "what ad is that?! Why is he staring at me like that?", before you go closer and find out what it's all about.

He is Great

MasyaAllah was all I could manage as I witnessed and experienced it all.

Today had to be one of the craziest most stressful day. I knew I had the Budget and Tax seminar to attend, the ETP book launch afterwards, and in between a lot of other meetings to attend and work to be done. On top of that, I fell sick. So sneezing and blowing my nose during the seminar and introducing myself at the same time whilst expanding my network amongst the few hundred delegates was rather annoying. So uncool.

I now believe it when people say 24 hours is never enough. There's just too much to do sometimes and if only we can extend the hours as and when we want. But I also know that it's because He will always test you as and when and only because He knows you can take it. Just when things were pouring out of my two hands and head...

  • Daddy was at the ETP launch, and he queued to get me the long-awaited ETP book on the Roadmap for Malaysia. Just because I was in a seminar.
  • Google map showed me the exact way to my destination and I got to the place I wanted to well before the event started.
  • Mama called me at the point when I was so stressed and ajak me for food and tea. Instantly no more stress! Food makes me happy. Always. Mums always know best!
  • Aiman got me the other executive summary book and CD, just because I couldn't make it and he got a good seat too.
  • Abang got me yummy buns from the bread shop.
  • Hafiz waited patiently for me in the office and Saiful took over to pass the Asia Pac season pass to me.
  • Tamimi grabbed my registration form for GIFF for tomorrow morning's session. Just because he intelligently spotted it on my work table.

... things just fall into place. One by one. That's definitely a test for patience and I definitely blessed to have the most amazing greatest people around me. Alhamdulillah :)

Economic Transformation Programme: A Road for Malaysia

Remember this? Tommorow is the launch of the "Economic Transformation Programme: A Road for Malaysia" and it's happening at the following details:

Monday, 25 October 2010

2pm
Dewan Merdeka
Level 4, Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC)

Few weeks back PEMANDU had the ETP Open Day, and I thought that the presentation and outcome was overwhelming. Positively overwhelming definitely. Now, in less than 24 hours, you can get your hands on the book! 3 versions! But well, if you need more information, do visit PEMANDU's wesite http://pemandu.gov.my/etp-roadmap/

It's unfortunate that I cannot go now, since it was brought forward by a day, and I'm already attending PwC's training with regards to the similar matter. "Unlocking Potential - Towards A High Income Economy". I'm excited to attend the training too, but I've also begged Aiman at the same time to be nice enough to get me a copy of the ETP book since he is going! :) Hehe... Thanks Aiman!

I am my age

but apparently I don't seem so to the rest.

I don't look my age. I "look younger".
I don't speak my age. I "speak older".

I look like a college/high school teenager. Sometimes. An intern look-a-alike at work at times. Apparently.
and I speak like a 25 year old. Apparently too.

All of these came from people around me, and when I make new friends.

Just yesterday, I had someone calling me 'Kak Alia'.
"Chop"
"How old are you?"
"23"
"Oh...hehe. I'm younger than you, so I should be the one calling you kakak"
"Huh?! I thought you were 25"
"What makes you say that?"
"Coz the topics you talk about and things you say. You speak with maturity."
"I'd say it's probably because of the exposure, experience and maybe also because I started work a little too early?"

Last week at the office, an office mate came up to me in the gym and asked
"In which department are you interning at now?"
"Hmm...I've actually worked for a year plus now"
"Oh dear me. So sorry love. You look like you're in your teens"
"haha! Thanks. I shall take that as a compliment"

Haha! I guess sometimes, you just can't judge a book by it's cover huh? :) I blame it all on the sickness that I suffer from. Which is to not have the will power to restrain myself from picking up all those business magazines in the book store. I could spend ages in there just reading those business magazines I tell you! Ask me about a Hollywood actor, and I might just point to Brad Pitt when you ask for Will Ferrell. I'm THAT bad sometimes.

Last week, I went over to get The EDGE from MPH. But instead of just The EDGE, I ended up spending a bomb and came out of the store, buying everything on the shelf! Hmmph. Well done la Alia. But in my defence, I am afterall helping the economy and expediting the cycle am I not? :P

Something that gives me great happiness!

A Different Class of Leaders

I have always had the luxury of studying overseas (thanks to my parents and the Government).
and if I were to rewind to those earlier days, I have also always had the luxury of going to a normal school and getting the necessary education which has led me to where I am today. However, how many of us would actually look back and be thankful to that and at the same time realize how fortunate they are as compared to many others that do not have the means and has limited access to good education?
Seriously.

Admit it, most of us work for the money these days. To aspire to become a CEO one day. To hold as many double, triple degree/Phd/professional qualifications. The more the money and the lesser the work, the better. Just recently, I had a meeting with a bunch of young corporates, and I don't deny that all they had to talk about was "How crazy work is" and "I'm not paid enough for the work I do" and "I'm tired of working". It's not extraordinary anymore. and sometimes it's true. But not all.

Now, imagine if THAT particular job is taken away from them and given to the less fortunate, who's really eager to work and aspires to be just the same. It might just have a different impact. Their enthusiasm is just as high if not higher to tell you the truth. These less fortunate, when given something so valuable, they appreciate it. A LOT.

So, why don't we, who are already where we are, instead of whining and complaining about pay and work load, give back to the community. To put ourselves in their shoes and help them. Maybe then we'll start appreciating things more. Sometimes it's just a case of greed. Greed is good (read: to want to achieve a lot in life) but in a country like ours, we should also never forget the less fortunate. Especially when our aim is to be a high income nation by 2020. See how it works? It's never impossible if everyone is willing to play a part. Every little contribution helps!

TEACH FOR MALAYSIA (TFM)
An initiative so good, their vision is  for all children in Malaysia to have the opportunity to attain an excellent education. Last weekend, I was invited to attend TFM's focus group session that they conducted to refine their recruitment and communication strategies. About 30 odd enthusiastic young corporates were seen to attend and it was a weekend, in the morning! They actually sacrificed sleep for a good cause :) What I'm trying to say is just that, try putting yourself in the less fortunate's shoes and you'd be wishing that they are many successful ones who would help them in any way possible to be just as successful :) There are many out there trust me. Just that they don't have the means to go around it!

Next week they will start on the TFM Classroom Series! I'm excited to see it kick off!! Miriyam Farooq, Managing Director of Teach for All will grace the first series. The details are as follows

Speaker : Miriyam Farooq, Managing Director of Teach for All
Venue : Auditorium, Level 29, Mercu UEM, Jalan Stesen Sentral 5, KL Sentral
Topic : The education gap around the world - The Teach For All experience
Date : 28 October 2010
Time : 7pm

I shall leave you with this that I got from last week's event.

So, see you guys at the event? Change has to start somewhere right? So why not now. Better late than never. Plus, you'll get to make so many new friends! :)

Time is the most valuable commodity

When one's too busy with 'saving the world', time is like a commodity so precious that every second matters.

However, last weekend has definitely been one of the most productive one ever! I always struggle to find time. Time to spend with my family. Time for my friends. Time for work. Time for the extra charity work. Time for other work. Time for other other work. Time time time. It's all about time

So what do I do? I bring my family, work and friends all together

Saturday,

I spent breakfast time with abang and mama (daddy was still in Europe). Then I went shopping with mummy and spent some mummy-daughter time before Aiman wanted to go to Bread Shop so mama gave the idea of him coming to OU instead to join us. Soon enough Vy arrived, and because she took so long, I had bought two tops just whilst waiting for her! Pffft... She said "EH, I need to get something kejap, 5 minutes!"

Mama and Vy agreed for coffee at delicious afterwards, after Vy got her stuff at Bimba & Lola. Me, Mummy and Vivy. I love it when we do this! It feels like it's the best most relaxing girl's time out, a good break indeed.

Soon enough, Aiman came and brought along Fazril, and Firdaus (who was supposed to come over to my house later on, I don't know why he sesat here so early), and there you go! We discussed YCM work, and at the same time had lunch and caught up with everyone. Just feeling happy on a good Saturday. Me, Mummy, Vy, Aiman, Firdaus and Fazril :):) My combination of work, family and friend. So much love!

In between, we managed to slip in some visits to Zara. Only me and Vy la. The boys and Mama stayed on to continue on deserts. Between scones and Zara clothes, I think you'd figure out which is better, isn't it? Straight after lunch, Aiman, Firdaus and I went to the YCM office to complete some work before I rushed home to prepare for a dinner with my CIMB loves! It's been ages since we last met, but definitely a good catching up session. So many things have happened since our last meet up. I swear by the time this ended, I was half past dead! The rest adjourned for a drink, but I went back instead coz I was getting too tired.

Balik balik je guess what?! Firdaus got us tickets to Wall Street 2! So it was a reach-home-spent-15 minutes with daddy who just got back from Europe-then-bye moment! I didn't even manage to change, instead I hopped into Firdaus' car and joined Aiman, Fazril and Kak Farrah for the movie. I thought that was it, I don't need to use my brain anymore, but boy was I wrong. The movie ended and the whole debate on Malaysia's budget and where our country is heading to with Firdaus went on in the car. Most of my brain cells died I tell you!

But whatever it is, these all happened in ONE day! I spent a really good time with my family. My friends. My work. Good times indeed :) Excellent weekend!

My Saturday loves
She ignored me when she saw clothes
...and I did the same to her!
She obviously didn't seem to care
It was all good no-brain-usage time
till the working boys came! Look at how Aiman is explaining
and coz Firdaus forgot to bring the YCM office keys

No weekend

After a 3 hours of sleep last night, a chilled favourite coffee of mine and The Edge definitely made my morning! :) Homaigod... now even a business newspaper can make my day. How sad am I? I used to hate The Edge (cause I never was able to finish it when I was younger). I feel old now just thinking how this has become my favourite reading material *sighs*

This weekend has been so hectic with so many meetings and so much work - it's exhausting. I was practically running around from one place to another, I even forgot to eat!

Let's Do Amazing

When I worked on the deal, I never thought I'd see the site.
The next thing I know, I was wishing I had not worn my high heels to Cyberjaya or even work to begin with in the morning.  There's so many up and coming developments in Cyberjaya, it just motivated me to see Malaysia's progress *pats Malaysia on the Back*

Last Tuesday, our Prime Minister came to launch
the largest facility of its kind and the single biggest investment in the country by a multinational technology company. YES! Malaysia's largest land facility, 63.3 acres across our modern Cyberjaya.

Datuk Badlisham Ghazali, MDeC CEO; Y.B Fadillah Yusof, Deputy Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation; Randy Mott, Executive Vice President and Chief Information Officer, Hewlett-Packard; YAB Dato’ Seri Najib Razak, Our Prime Minister; Eric Ikeda, Director HP Multimedia Cyberjaya and YB Datuk Maximus Ongkili Johnity, Minister of Science, Technology & Innovation

The Hewlett Packard Global Centre Campus, right here in Malaysia. Now, think GOOGLE :)

The announcement for this facility came about 2 years ago in October 2008, when the plans were still on the drawing board. And now it has materialise! Trust me when I say that Phase 1 was simply gorgeous! It's so modern, with the best technology, you feel like as if the energy around you is pumped up to the maximum. I'm not even kidding! I know I was smiling throughout when my team and I made our way onto both the completed and incomplete sites.

I remembered the first meeting we had with HP Multimedia's General Manager, Eric Ikeda. He came on stage to present his slides on the details of the campus, and it was nothing less that an iPhone launch. That was how great the launch was! Technical went well, sound system was excellent and with the presence of our Prime Minister and thousands of other guests, the whole event just felt complete. This was my first time going for a launch when the organizers did a bomb sweep prior to the PM's arrival.

Second phase is on it's way to be completed and finally would be the third phase. I personally believe that having the best technology supporting the Government's initiative is a wonderful collaboration. With just a superb facility like the one launched, instantly 4,000 new job opportunities are created. On top of it, not only that it demonstrates Malaysia's attractiveness and competitiveness as a global ICT hub, but also the fabulous opportunity that a facility like this will bring in terms of knowledge sharing and technology transfer. I am fully in support of our Government's ETP and 12 NKEA.

During the launch, Najib reiterated that MSC Malaysia will soon end its second phase of development and that the results of the project have been "more than satisfactory". So let's hope that everything runs smoothly, deal executed properly and we can live by HP's tagline together!

"LET'S DO AMAZING"

Just too many

This week has been so hectic, I don't even remember what day passes by and when the day came to an end everyday. It was THAT hectic.

I need a breather. Anyway, this week may have had one of the most exciting events.

Meeting with our Thai counterparts
The launch for Hewlett Packard's Global Centre Campus that was just so amazing.
Our off-site meeting, prior to the big day next month.
The crucial presentation with our lawyers. Think 'SELL PRODUCTS'. This was one heated one!
Budget announcement for Malaysia's 2011.

Hopefully I'll find the time to blog this weekend and tell you more about it. For now, I need to complete them work and then sleep for a 9 am meeting tomorrow. *pulls blanket and falls asleep accidentally* :P

Six Pictures Are worth Way More Than An Infinity Number of Words

One fine really-busy, I-walked-into-the-door day, my boss came up to me to pass me this

...the rest was history. A beautiful history

I now tap in with my new access card that comes with a change in the designation and my own parking spot in the building. I'm so very thankful :)
Alhamdulillah

LOVED THE ENERGY!

Nike City 10K KL today was a grand success! The energy was awesome, the determination was at it's peak and networking definitely was a two thumbs up :)

Abang and I woke up just slightly pass 5 this morning, chomped down a few pieces of the oatmeal raisin bread and pushed off from home straight after subuh prayers. We were both so eager to make our way to the race track that we forgot to attach the tag ID to our shoes ok (It's basically used to detect your timing and kilometres completed, I think Nike comes up with the most genius invention for sports sometimes!)! haha! Simultaneously, my cousins and uncles and colleagues pushed off at the same time with the plan to meet at the starting point.

When we got there, I got a shock of my life! I thought we will be one of the earliest, but I guess not! These people are just as eager as I was to compete for our Malaysia. Crazy enthusiastic people. I had a difficult time just rolling out of bed!
Half an hour before the run!

So we quickly attached our ID to our shoes,

plugged in them motivation into the ears and off we went!

Cousins all ready to run :)

We ran like a family holding hands together for a good 3 minutes before we decided to go our own way, with Faris leaving everyone else behind already, Uncle Jack taking the lead amongst the cousins, then Kak Azura followed closely behind. Her motivation was "to end my suffering so that I can drink water at the end", so off she ran! Funny betul. Abang followed, and the next one was Abang Shah who ran because he was searching and asking "Ehhh, mane my wifee ni?". Another joker. Kak Ina, Uncle and I decided to enjoy the cool breeze and the beautiful scenery for a wee while more before we sped our way through.

Sadly, 2 kilometres ahead, one runner collapsed into fits. WITH NO DOCTORS around! I don't know whether they've learned any lessons yet since the death that took place during the Standard Chartered run a few months back. I saw Abang Shah (don't worry, he's a qualified doctor :)) attending to him and abang looking for an official whilst many other crowded around the runner. I went ahead with my run though coz I don't see a point in a thousand people trying to help. It just becomes messy. What more when I'm not a doctor myself. I'd just be a nuisance.

Think it was in the 24th minute, I made friends along the way! hahaha. So, he works in a bank, she works in an audit company and the other is still a student. What do you expect, you were running with another 9,999 participants, you're bound to make many new friends.

Some 37 minutes and 40 minutes later. Tada! We both looked half dead, but well satisfied! :):)

The fastest in the men category did it in 18-freaking-giler-laju minutes, whilst girls open was 30-also-damn-laju-giler minutes! Faris made it close to winning but fell just a little short with 23 minutes :( Nearly there, so still well done Faris!!! :):) This was the finisher mascot that we were told to collect at the end of the race as a souvenir. Mine's called Jay, whilst the rest of the cousins got Ari. Looks like Upin and Ipin please!

Whatever it is, it was definitely a feel-good day! Running for a good cause and for a healthy living, with family members and friends (new and old) and contributing to charity and my Malaysia. Now that's a lot of good for a Sunday morning isn't it? I ended up signing up for another charity run at the end.

So, here's a heads up.

This weekend will be the Mizuno run at UPM.
In november will be the Penang Marathon and Charity run for HOPE Malaysia
Early December, Standard Chartered Marathon in Singapore
Afterwards also in December is the Malakoff run (registration opens next weekend if I'm not mistaken)
In 2011, Standard Chartered Marathon in KL

 The girls
 The boys
Mine and Abang's shoes. Yup! They're the same :)

So...What are you waiting for? Go sign up ald! :):) I swear I never knew I loved running....hmmm...Probably since the day I ran for the Bank.

Yang Berkhidmat Untuk Negara

Remember this?

Now we have this.

 My running kit!

It's finally here! :) Well, it's about time already. I am already exhausted. Probably from all the no-lunch-time-but Nike city run-mode instead everyday for the past 2 weeks. Best part of all, it's starting at 5.30 am tomorrow morning. Oh my God (I need my sleep). As it is, this week has been one busy week, I even walked into a door from all the rush. Sigh...I'm getting old.

Anyway, I'm so excited to do this!!! Not only will it be for a good cause running for charity, but also because you'll be doing Malaysia a favour. To run and contribute to the totality of kilometres. For Malaysia. Against Singapore :) Every little helps. Not only that, it seems like my whole family tree is going. From me, my cousins, uncles, aunties, cousin's friends, my friends, my cats, my cat's siblings, my cat's sibling's cousins.... and satu Malaysia la. This is a fun kinda national service! :):) *ahem, I think all firms should me this compulsory as part of CSR awareness* :P

I love KL city and I get very motivated when I see development and buildings like KLCC. I know la we contracted it to the Koreans la, Japanese la and basically not our own people, but it's still ours, and it makes me smile to be around it. So when I saw our route, I became even more excited!

Well one thing's for sure, DO NOT call me tonight, coz I'm sleeping straight after dinner. WE RUN KUALA LUMPUR! To the rest running it, ALL THE BEST, and let's run for HOPE Malaysia :)

Controlled Enthusiasm Fuels Inspiration

... was the title of one of the most interesting article I read in one of the many business magazines.

"Controlled enthusiasm is a priceless asset. No one is born with enthusiasm. It is developed by the correct combination of interest, knowledge and belief" - Dr Napoleon Hill

Hence, if you think hard about it, the more interest you generate in an idea, service or product, the more knowledge you will naturally seek. The more knowledge you gain, the more emotional belief will captivate you. As a result, you will reflect more enthusiasm for that which gained your interest. I think this is just the most genius equation - mathematically or not.

After reading this, I figured that maybe this is partly the disease that I suffer from that makes me so eager to work and so happy to be where I am. It's true when they say that enthusiasm puts into premise of 'whatever the mind can conceive and believe, it can achieve'. It causes you to glow and the feeling is just so contagious sometimes! It's like this great force within us that is perpetually prodding us to do our best, and at times, I get carried away that my mind moves faster than my hand can even follow. I love the adrenaline rush though when this happens :)

Here's the two important functions of enthusiasm as stated in the article. Firstly, it serves as the major factor in converting your negative emotions into positive ones, and secondly, it prepares your mind for the development and expression of faith.

Enthusiasm dispels physical fatigue and overcomes laziness definitely! It kinda stimulates the nervous system and causes it to perform its duties more effectively. Imagine you work in Treasury, and your number cannot even be 0.0000001 point off the mark! Oh dear God.

Anyway, regardless of age or occupation, enthusiasm is indeed of value to everyone. It's the quality that establishes confidence and breaks down the opposition of others. The cultivation of controlled enthusiasm is also a definite aid in maintaining a positive mental attitude.

But sometimes...it just overpowers you that, like today, the adrenaline rush and my nervous system was working simultaneously, that I was running and rushing up and down, vetting through the documents whilst I was running that I didn't realize what was in front of me. Yup, I ran INTO A FREAKING GLASS DOOR. Thankyouverymuch bye!

We're Boring (Working) People

My happy pill!
Today, we both concluded that we're boring people now that we've started working.

We see our friends less now, we eat fast food more and when we get that time to surprise our loves, it always revolves around work and it's a "Hi, bye" in a span of 10 minutes. Often it's

"Hii!"
"I've missed you!! Man it's been ages"
"I miss you too!"
"I'm tired"
"I'm hungry"
"How's work"
"Busy"
"You?"
"Busy also"

Continues chomping on 20 pieces of McNuggets, both minding our own business which usually focuses on our Blackberry screen. Next thing you see, we 'tweeted' each other. Homaigod. How much more boring can we get? Crazy.

Someone I love with all my heart, the one who knows how to cheer me up, always!
Well, one thing's for sure, real friends understand. They care and they know how to read you. It's a complicated relationship with real good friends. You may be continents apart, but somehow, you know what the other is up to and what they're doing. These are people you can run to when you're stress or even when all you want to do is annoy them in the face and tell them happy stories. They would still love you with all their hearts, no matter what :)

Them I tell everything to
Lil Miss Best Friend is still stuck in Melbourne. I miss!
And they just love London too much
Today, I have officially served 365 days at my first and only (as of now) beloved company and I am very proud to be a part of it. It's still very clear in my head the first day I stepped into the office and getting to know my whole batchmates. Happy moments indeed. I am so in love with my work!

TCB loves :)
